The dialogue font has a retro look, resembling the olden days of yore hand-lettered balloons. It possibly provided a sort of the sort of ally that'd eviscerate you sooner than help you. It certainly did nothing towards furthering the plot of upcoming war between prides. In fact, this entire book felt more like a dark, depressing detour from the great highway of the series as a whole. And unfortunately there wasn't any overall series arc development in Shift to distract me from the tedium that is Faythe. I've been with the series since the beginning and have felt all the way through that the books are entertaining, but the main character is a chore. Well, I finished Shift, and even after sleeping on it and debating this review, I'm left with this thought: Thank hell there's only one book left in the series. ![]() ![]() In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published their now famous paper in which they describe their discovery of the role of deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, a substance that was found within. It's a good fit for teens with an artsy and literary bent swaying toward offbeat. It's less the mature content and more the complexity and originality of the storytelling that dictates the right reader for Jane, Unlimited. She kisses both male and female characters, briefly. Swearing is consistent in the dialogue and includes "f-k." Jane is surrounded by adults drinking but doesn't drink. A character is in a state between life and death at the end of one scenario. A woman's arm is crushed and mangled, a man is crushed to death. A man and a dog are shot, the man fatally. They all contain a little violence, with occasional gunplay involved. The story follows five possible story threads. Her parents died in a plane crash when she was a baby. Jane is told that her aunt froze to death in Antarctica. The main character, Jane, in her late teens, is recently orphaned by the aunt who raised her. Parents need to know that Jane, Unlimited is an inventive stand-alone book by Kristin Cashore, the acclaimed author of the Graceling Realm series. ![]() |
